Cable Failure Discussion

12/18/2006 2:19 PM

Cables are widely used in the distribution networks at different voltage levels.

However, they suffer from aging which leads eventually to complete failure of the

cable. Two of the main aging mechanisms of cables are electrical and water treeing.

How can we discuss them? What are some useful references?

Keep your powder dry.

Seriously the gradual penetration of water into cables is a problem and most efforts are directed at testing cables for the presence of trees with a view towards replacing them prior to failure.

This penetration causes the formation of discharge trees(which fan out like mini tree roots and they gradually penetrate the insulation, at which point a catastrophic failure occurs).
