Momentum carries weight to different cycle points; find where the seeds propel head long to a corner of a slide, chamber or hopper and place a blade there that begins the split before centrifugally tumbling the seeds till they separate.

Wow! I still don't know how the hull gets removed, but Rube Goldberg would be proud.

Just pass it on - it'll come round eventually.

Keep in touch about the thesis.

I think they shell walnuts with high voltage. A mechanical approach would be to duplicate the threshing action of a combine harvester. That is a rotating cylinder with teeth or rub bars.

Those are the basics, now off to Wikipedia with you!

An old fashioned milling machine will do it: set the two stones at a distance apart which is slightly larger than the smallest diameter (of the largest hulls).

After the hull is broken off the seed by one of the mentioned methods, the hull and seed can be separated by airflow.

Even though the hull base material may have a high density it may still after removal exist in sheet like bits. The large surface area to weight ratio of the hull will be higher than the surface area to weight ratio of the seed. This will enable air separation. Both items are dropped and a side draft or up draft air flow will carry the hull away but let the seed fall.

The high surface area to weight ratio of the hull may also allow vibration separation where the hull may "rise to the top" of a bed of agitated material.

These items work for peanuts. I've had as many as 16 of these at once shelling sunflowers in my backyard.
