Performance of Cummins KTA50-32 Generator Set

09/09/2009 3:28 AM

We are about to have a performance evaluation of our Cummins KTA50-32 Generator Set (Prime Power) rated at 1.25 Megawatt. This equipment did not have major overhaul for the last 15 years. Since the maximum stable load that can be provided at our sugar factory is only about 20% of the rated, (a) will the test give an accurate results on engine performance in terms of accurate horsepower output, engine operating temperature, cylinder compression pressure, etc? (b) If this is not acceptable, what is the best option that we can undertake in order to attain actual condition of the engine at present, in particular?

A saltwater(NaCl) dummy load can be rigged from:- a tank, three 6 foot rail lines (or pipes/girders) some insulating material ,a hoist,a water supply of some 30 litres per minute and a secured. well ventilated, location. The tank should be circular in plan, at least 1000 litres and resist boiling brine. The 3 metal electrodes need to be hanging symmectricaly and with the bottoms level. You have not quoted the alternator voltage so the insulation is your choice.

When the tank is about 80% full a few handsfull of salt should be added. The electrodes are first energised then slowly lowered and the ammeter monitored. The water will boil and the steam carry off the energy. The water lost is made up as needed. Electrode depth is a fast control and as the water heats has to be adjusted. If the current is inadequate add salt.

You can rent dummy loads but this jury rig from odments will work.
