How to Flatten Heat Shrink Tubing

09/09/2009 9:01 AM

We are taking on a new project to flatten polyolefin heat shrink tubing, of various sizes.

I have searched many internet sites to find methods on the flattening process but have not discovered any exact methods.

Is there an improved technique that I could use to flatten the tubing.

The purpose of the flattening is to run the tubing through a printer, cut the tubing in specific lengths and then place on a plastic carrier. The end purpose of the tubing is for marking wires.

Thanks

Opposed rolls come to mind. Or:

K4350 Thermal Transfer Printing System - Heat Shrink Tubing and ...

something like this?

The above company has a printer and cartridges of heat shrink tubing for it just for that purpose.

the focus of the question is to suggest a solution for flattening. the query is not about printing on the ferrule.

Flattening of Heat Shrink tubings, for printing, is achieved with the help of a Special Purpose Machine. The design of this machine is proprietary. Ideally this should be done at the manufacturing stage, though a few companies in Europe have machines which can do it after manufacturing.

The preferred tubing is of Silicone material. this material has good amenability to heat marking print and also does not permanently deform of get creased during temporary flattening. therefore after printing it does carry an ugly blemish revealing that it had been flattened.

Bob,

Were you ever able to find the machine to flatten the shrink tubing? I am trying to locate this myself, is there any assistance you can provide?

Sorry for the late reply. I do not log on very often

We have worked on two paths.

We tried flattening in heated liquid baths passing the round heat shrink through rollers. In the lab we were successful but the time and cost of building our own equipment was not profitable.

We found a machine builder that specializes in this machine. PTL is the company. Delivered on time, if you are in the US insure that the motors are rated for the US power supply. We had a slight delay due to this slip. PTL reacted very quickly and were very responsive to our special needs.

We started running the machine this year and have found it to be reliable.

It did take some time to set up the recipes for each size.
