Pioneering 'Medical' Use of Nanotechnology

06/15/2005 2:26 PM

'Nano' has reached the medical world and in good time to save lives. Detecting the childhood infection 'respiratory syncytial virus'(RSV) usually takes about 2 to 5 days and by that time the infection could have already spread significantly.

This new use of nanotechnology can detect the presence of RSV in a matter of hours, catching the infection before it has time to spread further and save on medical costs.

"The new, high-tech method uses multi-colored, microscopic fluorescent beads, called quantum dots, which bind to molecular structures that are unique to the virus's coat and the cells that it infects"

Nanotech

I have the feeling most days that nanotech will shake the world in the same way that steam engines did. Ultra powerful, ultra flexible and more disruptive than anyone can imagine.
