Check for any wiring damage that might be connected to the speed sensor. If not, you are going to have to replace that sensor. Good luck.

Did you try to replace the Automatic Transmission Fluid and the filter?

Sometimes, this type of "flush" eradicates the problem. Otherwise, you better try to find the Service Manual before you let anyone tamper with your transmission.

If the oil/filter (and eventually a good ducts cleanup with compressed air) does not fix the problem, you may need to replace the sensor. But please, follow the procedure per the manual. Tropical shops tend to experiment before they really find the source of a problem, and you end paying for that.....

how do I check the oil level? do you know where is the location for that sensor to replaced it? I call a private mechanic from european cars & he told me that if he needs to change 8.5 quartes of transmission oil it's going to cost me $544.00, he told me that he thing that the problem is in the electric plate + his work $150.00, if this is the problem (transmission oil & filter) I can do it my self or not? the 8.5 quartes of transmission oil just cost me $90.00 not $544.00????

thank you guys! God Bless you!

Yes, you should be able to remove the oil yourself. However, the filter change (that is inside the transmission) needs a plate removal and if you are not trained, you may have a hard time.

The oil should me easy to meassure with the long stick that is normally located in the left side of the engine, close to the firewall, with a red plug that is oppened by first lifting a securing lock (lift it with your fingers, easy). Then with the engine in idle, warm, remove the stick, clean it (with a clean cloth or paper) and then put it back into the pipe, wait a second, remove it and check the oil level. There is a level for "cold" and "hot" engine, better if you use the "hot" mark.

The oild can be removed with a special pump that some shops have, who introduce a hose inside the pipe (that you used to measure and that you use to replace othe ATF). Once you pumped all the oil, you replace the same amount and then adjust until you reach the correct upper level for "hot" engine. DO NOT go over the upper level mark. Transmissions work better with exact oil level, not with surpassed levels.

Let me know how you did with it...

As for the sensor....If replacing the oil does not smothens your driving, you may need to replace the famous sensor anyway...that is a big dollar tag job....as any job with our loved MBs...

Hello i have a 2000 SLK 230 Kompressor with the same problem. The car is stuck in 2nd gear in both drive and reverse. My father purchased the conductor plate and replaced it, but the problem still occurs. Do i have to change the speed sensor aswell? And if so where is it located?
