Factors When Installing an Exhaust Removal System

I am sizing an exhaust removal system consisting of a hose to be attached to the exhaust of a large stationary vehicle (ie truck) which uses negative pressure to remove the exhaust from the pipe and a fan in a duct to transfer the exhaust to an discharge location.

This is the first time I have done this, and I was wondering which factors should be taken into account when doing it. The fan power and location will be determined by the frictional losses in the duct, what do I need to caculate this? I am currently pouring over an ancient textbook in search of an answer.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Figure it out. The displacement of the engine x rpm will tell you how much air the engine puts out. For your purposes, consider the engine a positive displacement pump.

I'd go to Graingers (Disclaimer) and buy some exhaust fans and duct hose.

Or, get fancy and buy a 3HP centrifugal blower.

Except that the "air" is expanded as it passes through the cylinder. The clean air in takes up less volume than the dirty air coming out!

I have always had the opinion that the exhaust volume was 2.5 to 3 time the inlet volume of an IC engine due to temperature rise and combustion by-products. Depending on the operating RPM you might have more "air" than the fan could handle.

Safest is to deal with Nederman or Plymovent as the other poster suggested. If you like to experiment, have at it, but be careful of what you're breathing.

If you have compressed air available, air amplifiers are the simplest solution.

The system is in fact manufactured by Nederman. With the total losses calculated to be 1625 Pa, I have chosen a fan with capacity 1750 m3/h. This is the highest capacity available for the model of fan I am restricted to using. It seems a little low to me with the given loss. Will a higher rpm/frequency make up for this?
