White Christmas Help

12/23/2006 8:10 AM

Anybody know a home brew I can concoct to mimick commercial chemicals used in snow making? I am in Detroit, MI and it does not look good for a white christmas. I have a pressure washer and thought I could thrill the kids if I could make enough to coat the windows and a maybe a few branches on the trees. I know ski resorts pump ground water at about 700 PSI through large axial fans. My pressure wand is about 1700PSI. The OAT for Sunday night is expected to be down to 24 Degrees F.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

I think they pre-chill the water to close to zero C and then spray it out high into the airas many fine needle jets that break up via capillarity. 24F is not cold enough unless you have 100 foot fall path or more. Notice how they spray down hill.

A search gets this

might be a tip or two in there

Snow makers really don't add that much, most of the time just plain water from local streams/ponds. Air Temperature must be below freezing and the humidity should be low, to take advantage of evaporative cooling, as the water is thrown through the air. Height could be the most important to you, gives the droplets more time to freeze as they fall.

I don't want to see a report on TV Tuesday about a guy making snow in Detroit that slipped and fell off a house roof because of the ice he created.....You might win an award if you do.

Daughter is a Snowboard instructor at Ice-face (oh I mean Whiteface) near Lake Placid NY.

They sell snow-making gadgets for home backyard use (altho up here in Northern NY I can scarcely imagine why). Try this site: http://www.snowathome.com/ Today we are supposed to get nearly a foot, so I don't believe this site will get many hits from up here.

Happy Holidays
