Motor Controller on Hyster Forklift

09/22/2009 2:21 PM

I have a problem with my Hyster forklift, model: E40 XL-27. It has the GE EV100 motor controls. When you turn a corner above the creep speed of the machine the controler shuts down and has to be reset. You have to turn the key switch off and back on to reset it. Not only is it a destraction but I'm thinking there are bigger problems that could arise from this if I neglect to find the cause. I haven't found any techs who could help so far, and was wondering if anyone here had ever seen this or had a clue what is causing it. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

ardee

Sounds like the dead-man switch in the seat is opening during cornering. Either get a driver with a fatter butt or replace the dead-man switch.

Sounds like it could be a loose connection somewhere, loose switch or switch not properly made, loose module, contactor contacts. Could be any number of things that can change position when you turn a corner. Sorry can't be more specific, but think that's where you will have to start. I have some info on the EV100ZX, drawings etc if that would help.

Regards

I've looked at most all components on the controller and have done checks on most for shorts but I'm not sure they will ever show up when I doing the checks since it resets as soon as you let off the montrol and re-in-guage. I have most of the diagrams on the system as well as the manuals maybe just need to dig a little harder.

Thanks a lot, it's all good info.

Have you approached Hyster?. They produce quality Fork Lifts I have used some of them in our plant and they worked well.

Re: Motor Controller on Heister Forklift

Forklifts like many other pieces of materials handling equipment have safety devices that are in place to prevent accidents. You mentioned that the controller shuts down when you turn a corner at a speed faster than creep speed. This is to prevent you from turning this equipment over or dumping the load you are carrying. As you mentioned (motor controller) I think that it is a fairly safe bet that this is an electric forklift or lift truck. You did not state that this equipment is one that you stand on to operate or sit down, tho you did give the model #. I have operated many different brands of forklifts, so I am familiar with their safety devices.

It would have helped me to know whether or not this condition exists when turning both left and right, but as you have not stated that, I will assume that this issue occurs in both directions. I would look at the safe handling and operating manual to find out just how to operate this piece of equipment within it's safety parameter's. You may find that this is intended to be, to prevent injuries. It may also be carrying the load/forks, too high for the speed you are moving, and this is just another of the many safe handling characteristics built in to prevent accidents. If you do not have access to the manual that comes with all new equipment of this type then I suggest you contact the manufacturer and get one. If you are operating a piece of rented equipment, the renting agency should have showed you how to operate this equipment safely.

You may have purchased this equipment used, and the manuals did not come with it. I highly recommend that you get them "and read them" before assuming that there is something wrong with it. In the end, you could have a faulty sensing device, or parts that are worn to such an extent that the device is triggered "out of time" with in the safe handling characteristics of this equipment.

The most important thing to understand here is that there may not be anything wrong with the equipment, the problem may exist with the way it is being used.

It's a sit drive model with the EV100 General Electric motor controls. The condition does exist when turning both directions. We always run with the forks as low t the floor as we can without rubbing the floor. I do have all the manuls accioated with the machine.

I apreciate the solutions you menchioned here I'll check it out.

Thanks a million,

from the stop position, do a sharp turn in one direction and try to go, then turn the steering in the other direction and try to go. if one or the other direction does not make the unit travel, then check the out ward turn wheel motor for worn brushes, or loose connection on cables. or check the traction contactor tips or contactor armature pin isn't broken off. if the unit has steer limit switches make sure they are adjusted right or working at all. also you can jack up both drive tires and try to do a straight travel. you will see if both drive motors are running.
