Polymers and Metal Electrodes

09/22/2009 2:34 PM

Hi,

I am a new engineer and I need some help with a design project. I will be creating a disposable biosensor similar to test strips used in glucose meters. My question is, for Au deposition on to a polymer base (polyester / HDPE), would any surface treatment be necessary for the metal to hold? I read that some of the current manufacturers use Melinex 329 without treatment and it works, but I am not sure how different Melinex is compared to normal polymers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey TheRabbit

I'd get on to someone at Du Pont about this.

This is from their website:

Typical Applications

Melinex® 329 is used as a base for pressure sensitive labels, in security and access cards, in multiple use tickets and in general printing applications.

It is also used for medical diagnostic test strips.

Good Luck!

Melinex 329

Generally gold is in powder formate and not flake this is what I am guessing. During manufacturing of gold powder every manufacturer needs to use faty acid (saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon) to overcome agglomeration issue of fine powder. The gold powder cost also changes based on how good control they have on particle size distribution and agglomeration resistance of this powder.

The coating can be leased by polyster / HDPE if it is not chemically compatiable. I am not sure what you have in your hand but you can ask powder vendor to give coating which is stable for used on polyster / HDPE and you will be okay. There are gold paste available which is compatable to Polyster and HDPE from Global Applied Materials and one company in Boston, MA in USA

If you need further help you can always send email to me

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies, @lynlynch: thanks for the suggestion, I will contact dupont.

@Masyood: I will be contracting with a lab to sputter deposit the gold on to the polymer base. I will call them to see what they have. Thanks for offering to help, I will email you if I have any questions.

Adhesion to polyester should be better than to HDPE.
