Producing Magnetic Fields

09/24/2009 11:24 PM

Dear All :

I would like to absord the small piece of iron or metals from the soil.

Is it there is any equipment can produce such big magnetic field which will not affect to human???

Thanks.

Yes, the Earth itself .

You need to provide more information such as how large are the iron pieces, how deep, what soil types, does it need to be handheld, etc. Are you trying to pick up bits of metal lying in the sand (in which case a simple electromagnet may do the trick) or separate the iron from the soil molecules?

Is it there is any equipment can produce such big magnetic field which will not affect to human???

What units are you talking about what you say "produce 15000"? If you mean magnetic field strength (in Tesla or Gauss) then that's a pretty huge electromagnet (in which case the answer is a definite no for safety and no for practicality).

Please provide much more information.

Guest,

I recall using a benchtop device back in college geochemistry lab nearly 30 years ago, called a Frantz Separator. It was capable of separation of (dry) particles according to their magnetic susceptibility, either paramagnetic or diamagnetic.

Basically, it consisted of a huge electromagnetic coil equipped with an inclined, vibrating chute. Soil granules traveling down the chute take paths determined by their magnetic susceptibilities.

This device worked quite well for relatively small sized soil samples. It also wreaked havoc on most electronic devices within a 50 foot radius when it was switched on, including equipment located in the computer lab on the floor below.

(I'm talking mainframe/punchcard computer lab era!)

Alternating use of the Frantz separator, and the old Ro-Tap sieve shaker didn't exactly endear us geology students among the computer science majors...

The Frantz company also manufactures industrial scale devices, using similar magnetic separation technology.

Take a look at (do a search on) metal recycling plants. They pound cars into small fragments with giant rotary hammers in about 60 seconds after removing all the fluids and flamable components. Pretty amazing stuff!

I did this in sand as a little kid. Just use a good magnet and slowly drag it around in sand and you will get metal ore very thin on the magnet and it is pure. In the mountains I have discovered small metal rocks also that are iron.
