More viruses.

09/27/2009 10:05 AM

Hi. I got some viruses on my system earlier, and consiquently removed them using AVG and malwarebytes. Now, when I start my pc, it goes to the log on screen, which it doen't usually do, and then doesn't load anything. I tried opening task manager, which got closed a few times automatically, and by pot luck opened so I could start the internet. Explorer is not running, it also automatically closes. I am really stuck. I need my pc working again. Please help!

I can't remember what post it was in, but someone suggested typing a command prompt to fix the glitches when the windows CD was in. Does anyone know what I mean? I think that may fix it.

Also, it won't let me open any web pages, apart from CR4 (luckily). It comes up saying application failed to initialize. This is the same in chrome and IE 8

I can go on the internet when explorer is not running. I have used UBCD4, ultimate boot cd 4 for windows using the restore registry to an earlier time (the most recent was mid august). That hasn't done anything. I have also tried system restore in desperation. I am at my whit's end.

If the virus you picked up is a rootkit virus, you're hooped. Wipe your hard drive and reinstall everything - and you can't even trust your old data files! A few rootkits can even write themselves into the BIOS.

If none of this works, Google for a copy of memtest. There is a possibility that your RAM has some dead areas on it.

Bondy should have Gmer installed so a rootkit would not be a likely suspect.

I've used Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition for years... (Knock on wood) Seems to have worked really well so far, and we're talking 10+years.

Yes I agree with the bouncing fuzzball Format and reinstall the OS or buy a new computer with an installed OS like I did Dell P4 2.8GHz for $165 bucks it is refurbished but works great. Get it on US eBay.

All things tend to diminish in effectiveness. AVG has been hit many times this year and like Kapersky they have wained a bit.

May you should try Comodo's Internet suite

If you can remember the date when you picked up the virus, go to the "system restore" menu and restore your computer to a date previous to getting the virus.

This is a much faster and easier method of restoring the multiple registers.

Some of the white line files which have been infected, I have replaced by copying the file off my laptop (which is also xp pro). That seems to help a bit, but the win32/heur keeps flashing up still.

see if you can open a command prompt (i.e. start->run->type cmd in box and enter)

in the command line box (black box) type in SFC /SCANNOW and press enter

this will ensure windows integrity on system files. Hope this helps.

Re: More viruses.

It says "windows is checking the integrity of the files", the bar goes all the way to the end, then the box just dissapears. I presume that means they are all ok, or it is being tricked into thinking that.

Explorer now loads, everything seems to be working except the internet browsers, but MSN still works. I am writing this on my laptop btw.

I have done that by replacing some of the system 32 files with clean ones copied from my laptop.

I think it is something to do with system32/heur. I have searched and done a search for this illusive file, but to no avail. Maybe it is the virus?

Some things to Check. Control Panel->Internet options->connections->lan, make sure no proxies are defined. Close window. if still failing try start->run-> (in box) type netsh winsock reset catalog if running sp 2 or higher. If it is still failing (browsers are running but just not loading pages) try a repair on the browsers or ultimately re install browsers./

You might want to try Microsoft's Windows Live One Care Safety Scanner (free). I found that is pretty good at finding problems; http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm?s_cid=sah/?s_cid=sah

Last time my system crashed I had AVG, it did an update and was all she wrote.

Best of Luck, my friend

I have removed a further 10 or so infections, and the windows firewall still periodically gets disabled, for which I have to re-enable every time, and Google Chrome will not start still, saying "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the application" It comes up with that message twice, and then opens chrome, which then won't open any pages.

Are you ready for a cure, how about a quick and secure cure? I thought so, download this file to disc on your other computer then boot the infected computer from the disc and wait for it to restore your system.

I think most the viruses are gone, but one is named svchost I think, because upon startup it takes about 98% of my processing power. Also, there is another svchost, which is uninfected and reports as using 0% CPU power. How would I remove this?

What does svchost do?

When I end the one that uses 98% cpu, the meter immediatley drops to about 10%

svchost

Is a part of Windows or could be virus, try this open task manager, check tick box for all users and then right click svchost and select end process, if it disappears from the list it maybe a virus, normally a windows panel will appear instead.

I can, and have ended it, but there is the other svchost, which has always been there, and I do not end.

Now create a restore point. Then go to start / computer / right click the system drive and run disk clean up; including deletion of all but the most recent restore point. Reboot. Defrag, reboot.

If you're talking about additional incidences of svchost, don't worry too much. All processes started will create an incidence of svchost. It's Window's way of saying some process is running here, but you don't really need to know what it is.

Since a virus is actually a process, it will also create an incidence of svchost. However, the converse is not true - just because it says svchost, doesn't mean it's a virus.

Try looking at things like the printer spooling window or check what's running in the tray. Sounds more like you have a process that waiting like crazy to get done, but it's unable to start. Like it's trying over-and-over to connect to some device.

If it is possible to get into AVG download the latest updates and then make a boot disk set using AVG. You then boot with the disks and it will check you Master boot Sector and other things at boot up. If you can not do this ask a friend to make a boot disk set for you. Then after you fix your computer think about Norton Ghost which will back up an image of your entire drive(s). I had a problem where I could not boot into windows at all so I got out my recovery disk and it cured everything and restored my data at the point I last backed up. Great software and I do not have the latest version. It is best for backup to an external drive but some people backup to another drive in the puter. Hope you fix it.
