Range hood efficiency - Axial Fan vs Centrifugal fan

Hi all,

I am not from mechanical side. I am looking to install Kitchen range hood. After going through the models i came to know they offer with 2 types of fan. Can any one please help to choose which is more efficient . Axial fan or Centrifugal fan.

When they say 650 cfm . Does it mean that same flow of air can be achieved with both types

The centrifugal fan might be slightly more efficient if both fans are operating at their best efficiency point, but it is probably more expensive too. Your best indication would be to look at the operating watts or amps of the motor, if they are both running at 650 CFM at the same pressure. The motor with the lower watts or amps is more efficient.

Typically, axial fans are used with low flow and pressure, which would be the case if your exhaust just goes straight up to the roof with a vent cap. However, if you have alot of ductwork with bends, dampers, etc. then you might consider a centrifugal fan.
