In service Testing of PVC pipe for Brittleness

10/02/2009 4:53 PM

Does anyone know of an approved method of testing to determine the brittleness of in-service PVC pipe?

We are preparing an inspection program for the in-service testing and inspection of PVC pipelines inside above ground 80' tall potable water tanks. The client has requested that we test the pipelines for flaws and or cracks at predetermined locations. We will utilize straight beam shear wave to accomplish the testing and inspection. However, the client has submitted an additional testing request; that we test the underwater pipelines for "Brittleness" as a means to determine remaining service life, and to create a risk based assessment of the most probable locations at which damage might occur in the short term and long term.

We have contacted the ASNT group, DuPont and JM eagle manufacturing, but no one seems to have a solution, if indeed one exists.

We would appreciate any guidance in this matter.

Thank you.
