Sound Card Problem

10/04/2009 2:47 PM

Friends, I have k9neov2 motherboard having 7.1 built in sound card. It is creating problems now. It is not detecting any audio devices connected with it. Sometimes, it shows that devices are plugged to the pins which are not connected with any device.

I am unable to here any sound from it. Tell me what to do as I have little knowledge of these kind of problems. Thnx

Add a sound card or replace with an Intel motherboard and chip.

Is a laptop?

Return it.

Based upon the little information you've provided, it sounds like you have an MSI K9N Neo v2 with an Athlon X2, Athlon 64 or Sempron in a desktop machine, and that it's at least a couple of years old. Yes, no, maybe?

The first thing to do is to try reloading the sound drivers. Check again to make absolutely certain of the make and model of your motherboard, and then download and install a fresh copy of the audio driver from the manufacturers website. These are usually self-installing .exe files. This may solve your problem, but I will not guarantee it. It sounds more likely that you have a hardware issue. Mind, this is just a guess based upon the very little that you've said.

Now, if updating the driver does not fix the problem, then you almost certainly do have a hardware problem, with your motherboard. This leaves you with two choices. As my learned colleague bwire has suggested, you can install a sound card in one of your expansion slots and then load drivers for that. However, the thing to consider before doing so is this.

You already have a motherboard that is experiencing a fairly major circuit fault, and such always make me nervous. In 24 years of playing with these things, it's been my experience that when one circuit of a board goes, the rest are going to follow. Which brings me to choice two, and I believe the better choice. Replace the motherboard. This will save you a lot of headache and frustration over the long run.

Replace your board with a top-quality (not necessarily top-price) motherboard. I personally recommend either an ASUS or one of the new Ultra-Durables from GigaByte. Spend a few extra bucks (pounds, rubles, whatever) now for the best quality components, and your machine will be long since obsolete before it dies on you. This is why ThinkPads and MacBooks are all but immortal.

I've had good success changing out AMD motherboards this last year using this one from ASUS M3A78-CM; about $75. The OP could save money by keeping the original CPU & RAM memory too and spring for the newest O/S. The MB has decent integral sound and video with a very user friendly installation procedure well suited to for a newbie with help.

I faced similar problem long back, and solved it by replacing in-built sound card with an additional sound card on optional ports that is normally provided on every motherboard.
