2.4 Ghz Home Telephone RF Range Increase

10/05/2009 11:01 AM

I recently changed my antenna on my phone base unit 2.4 Ghz Spread Spectrum to a USA made (not China RF) 7dbi SMA/RP SMA antenna. Now I am talking to my neighbor from across the street. The clarity is incredible and I have a built-in antenna (cheap) inside the handset. The antenna transmits and receives very well. Not bad for about $7.50. It is the same antenna used for routers same freq. and I just wanted to comment to my fellow Engineers that this is a fun project plus you can get phone calls outside. The cheap antenna was plastic with one wire no ground. The 7dbi was coax what a difference in range and you can increase the range of your routers with this right angle 7" antenna!

I did something like that on an older 900mhz spread spectrum cordless phone I used to use. I removed the antenna that came with it, and put a bnc connector in its place. I made the antenna which was just a simple dipole, but I was able to walk about a mile away and talk on the phone without a problem.

I also modified that phone by adding connectors for the audio in and out so I could connect it to my pc and use it with VoIP software. Now of course they sell stuff for doing that, but at the time it wasn't available.

Yes lower freq. phones I could go up the block but 2.4Ghz is very clear but does not like obstructions. I was amazed at the improvement very low VSWR. I still get some dropouts outside but I would need and outdoor antenna or a linear Power amp. LOL.

My 900Mhz phone was very clear also. The clarity of the phone has more to do with it being digital and less to do with the frequency it is operating at.

I have found the distance the phone goes really depends on the brand and design, but the antenna is one thing that can really make a difference, more so than a power amp.

It is SMA/RP SMA into a coax SMA small connector. 7dpi made in USA about $7.50. 2.4 Ghz 6 3/4" high with right angle connection.

Thanks! Did you add an SMA connector to the base station?

Yes a small footprint with a hex nut with a 6" coax with a connector I just cut off. The original antenna had just one wire no braided ground and I had dial tone dropouts inside the house. Now no dropouts at all a drastic difference and a USA made high quality antenna. The antenna for routers is usually RP SMA but this was advertised SMA compatible and screwed right in. RP SMA is more common.

Mav Man,

It is important to note that some 5.8GHz cordless phones use the 5.8Ghz frequencies only for base-to-handset transmissions, while still using the 2.4Ghz frequencies for handset to base transmissions.

This is a older phone and the base antenna is to long for 5.8 Ghz and it is advertized 2.4 Ghz Freq. hopping so the real proof is the last post I just sent about no more dropouts and a very strong signal it has improved drastically so I think I am T/R on 2.4 Ghz otherwise how can I talk to my neighbor right outside her door maybe 80-100 yards with obstructions! I wish I had a spectrum analyzer and a VSWR meter!

MavMan,

If it works good both ways who complains.
