10/08/2009 12:18 AM

what is the purpose of isolator, generally we say it as a off-load device but we are not using in breaker less than 11kv feeder, and some said it is for indication that breaker is open but what is the correct answer

As per IEC, the definition for isolator is:

With the device in OFF condition and with 120% Voltgge available at the incoming side, the leakage current at the outgoing terminals should be less than 2 mA. In switches, this will be more than 6mA.

And, please note that there are ON-LOAD Isolators availabel in LV too (415V) even upto a current rating of 3200A.

but actually for heavy currents we will be using breaker for opening the contacts on ON-Load conditions hence the supply will be cut off on isolator, hence how would be this possible, i am not sure , you may be correct but clear me please
