BSETT Courses

10/08/2009 1:51 PM

I am Sergeant First Class in the Army and I really would like to pursue a degree in Electronic Engineering, but with my schedule I can really only afford to take classes online. The Army pays for all of my schooling so money really isn't an issue, but there are a limited number of schools that I can choose from, and they only offer the BSEET. I haven't heard alot of good things about Devry on this site, so im wondering if Thomas Edison University would be a better choice for a BSEET. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Have you seen what the military academies have to offer as EE degrees? I have a feeling that you can combine military and engineering carriers.

Before investing much time and money in an online or distance degree, buy John Bear's book (or do it online). Bear knows more about legitimate distance education than anybody I've ever run across.

This might not be what you want exactly, but there is a fully accredited (ABET) BSEE available, by distance, from a well-respected engineering school. The University of North Dakota offers a standard program, which is fairly rigorous, that should satisfy your needs. The program typically requires at least six years and does require some short-residency labs on campus. I don't know how you can work that into your leave schedule, but it is worth asking about. You can't be the first GI to ever ask.

JKerns002,

TVP45 makes an excellent observation. I recently added a management degree to my engineering degree and did it all online. Bear's book was extremely helpful in finding the appropriate, accredited program for my pursuit. Good advice!

Dear Sgt.,

First of all, thank you for your service to this country and its people.

You may want to look into Norwich University in Vermont. It is a military prep school that offers outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering. I do know that they offer graduate studies online. Perhaps they offer the same for undergraduate engineering. Look up their website and do some exploring!

Also, I believe that Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester NY (where I earned my BS in Civil Engineering) may offer online undergraduate studies in Electrical Engineering. I had three college roomies that went through the BSEE program there and each is now working for top notch Fortune 500 companies. I do know that the BSEE programs are RIT is outstanding and one of the best in the country.

I also believe that Georgia Tech may offer the same. Worth looking into any of them. I suppose it all depends where you're stationed, as you will need to travel to the school of you choice from time to time to have meetings with faculty, etc. You may want to choose a school close to you.

After all is said and done, may I suggest that you do a Google search?

I wish you good luck in your endeavors, and let us know how you make out! Have a great weekend Sargent!

Signed,

CaptMoosie (former Captain, USAR)

Sir,

Thank you for the reply and to everyone else for their advice as well. There are alot of great schools out there that offer BSEET and BSEE courses online, the problem is that there are only a few that participate in the Go Army Ed program, and none of them offer a BSEE, just the BSEET. Really im limited to Devry, Thomas Edison, Grantham University, and one or two others. Im just wondering if anyone has any experience with any of these schools, or know if a degree from any of them would be worth anything to employers. I am very hands-on and enjoy working with electronics so I think that a BSEET might be something that I would use after retirement. I know that I can take courses through other schools not offered and the Army may reimburse me later, but I can't afford it right now. Again thanks alot for the advice!

Jason

Do you mean Thomas Edison State College (as in New Jersey)? That's a decent school and might give you a start on a career.

I looked at the list of schools. Not a lot of choices, is there?

No there aren't a whole lot of choices on their list. Im still looking at other schools because I guess there is a way to have the army pay for the school anyway. The only problem I see with TSEC is that it doesn't seem to be ABET certified..

First Sargeant,

Your first stop should be the education office on Post. In the USN we had the 'Navy Campus' and they will be able to direct you to an institution for online courses. Depending on your specialty you may be able to take the Dante tests and get out of quite a few of them. Also you may get credits for your specialty and your rank in that specialty. Getting a college to accept those credits may be a problem, but the education office on Post should be able to help with that also.

On another note, please get it done while you are Active! I always thought that I was too busy and the Job came first. Now I have retired to a state where the colleges do not accept credits for the experience we achieved in the military or the credits that the ACE assigned to the courses taken. I am just out of luck unless I do it all online with inflated tuition.

Thanks for all you and your Troops do for us!

Thanks for serving our great country!

You are better off with a BSEE if you can swing it. However, I understand the need for online classes given your occupation. I had to take the online route too.

Be careful with DeVry. DeVry is a for profit higher education organization. Their classes usually transfer to traditional universities as electives.

Find a program that is TAC ABET accredited. Also, find a college that is regionally accredited.

You may want to check www.petersons.com for help with finding a school. Old Dominion University (ODU) and Excelsior tout their history for working with military personnel. I have taken a class ODU though streaming video. The class was okay but the lab was hard to complete. You will need to work with a local community college to use their facilities for the lab work. Excelsior is where I finished a BSET. They do not have credit requirements for finishing the last 30 or 60 credits at their school like some others.

Math and science will be an issue. Hopefully, you have a two-year degree or you can work with a community college as a transient student. Distance education is not conducive for lab work for EET classes or science classes. Also, math via distance is hard but it can be done. I tried Calculus II through the University of Tennessee but the only grade was a final that I scored in the 50's. I ended up with applied Calculus from Excelsior. It is fine for the degree requirement but will only transfer as an elective if I pursue post graduate education. I took Differential Equations form Oklahoma State independent study and was able to pull a B out of the class.

Best of wishes and thanks again for serving us.

Yes. Guest beat me to this, so ditto.

I know (think) this is not on your GoArmy Ed list, but it should be. You might be able to do a sort of end run. Excelsior (make sure you look at Excelsior College, NOT Excelsior University) accepts all kinds of credit transfers into a credit bank. You might end up taking your courses someplace where the Army pays and transferring most of those to Excelsior. You might even get credit for Army courses you've taken. Check them out.
