Carbon Potential

10/10/2009 12:06 AM

We have austempering furnace. where the inner atmosphere will maintain by mainting Carbon Potential inside the Furnace shell. Status of Carbon potential in the furnace is measured by Mv(Mili Volat) Value. Can you tell me what is the Carbon Potential? How the mV value give the status of CarbonPotential inside the furnace shell.

If the gas in the furnace is too high in carbon, it will diffuse into the steel creating a carburized case. If it is too low in carbon, it will pull carbon out of the surace of the steel. Carbon potential is a measure of the atmosphere's ability to increase or decrease the amount of carbon in the surface of the steel.

It is controlled by varying the amount of fuel and the fuel/air ratio inside the furnace.
