2/3 pitch Alternators Vs Full Pitched Alternators.

10/12/2009 12:43 AM

Dear All, I have a question to seek advise from the experts here. I understand the advantage of 2/3 pitched alternator against the full pitched ones due to the 3nd harmonics issues. But does 2/3 pitched alternators produce less neutral current than the full pitched ones? Does the neutral current produce from the either the full pitched or the 2/3 pitched alternator has the impact on the overall system or causing the genset to under perform? I do not have sufficient documents to prove the above mentioned statement. If anyone out there experience this kind of problem before pls kindly advise? Thanks

If it is a 3 phase alternator, then the less the third harmonic component, the less the neutral current. The neutral current is the vector sum of the three phase currents and the third harmonics of all three phases are in phase with each other.

dear guest, yes u are right if the system is balanced the phases will cancelled out each other and there should not be any current from the neutral. But for my case, voltages at the 3 phases are balanced ie Alternator is voltages are balanced but yet the neutral still has large neutral current. Does it got to do with the pitch design? Does 2/3 pitched really reduce the neutral current? So far the load is balanced.
