New Horizons

12/31/2006 11:01 PM

I am a new student to Civil Engineering with some work experience in Mechanical and Structural design. I have just recently joined CR4 and enjoy the reading. It seems I am always learning something new daily. I have been advised by some colleagues of mine to take the State P.E. exam this coming year. Surprisingly, as I decided to do so in 2007, I received an advertisement from the N.S.P.E. entitled "P.E. Readiness". Can anyone tell me about this service? Is it good help? Is it a wise investment?

If the course is offered from your local city/county/state testing facilities, then yes it is a good investment to actually take the prep course and let the establishment practically give you the answers to the PE test. Most places I have lived do offer throught the state board an oppertunity for individuals the chance to prep for exams.

If it is a private entity, beware of the carpetbaggers, they come and go with not much real information. Check with your local lisencing board about the credibility of such an establishment. Success rate of students in passing the board exams.

Good luck in the exams......

I assume you are located in the US. There is a national registry of PE's. IIRC it is an umbrella organization covering all engineering disciplines. <http://www.nspe.org/>.

First you must have taken the PE exam for your state and discipline. Once you have a BS degree you can take the engineer in training exam and after acquiring a number of years gaining experience you can take the rest of the exam and an oral exam to receive the PE certificate. It all but impossible to pass the EIT exam with out the knowledge gained through obtaining a BS in the desired discipline.
