wind load distribution

I am doing the analysis of trasmission tower. I am using abaqus and a space truss frame model to do the analysis. How and where should I apply the forces on the frame i.e. what is the distribution according to the height?

Don't know, do you?

Neither do I. That's why I'm not, "doing the analysis of trasmission tower". I'm not qualified to do such analysis. Neither are you, apparently.

Consult an engineer with the proper training for the proper answer.

In some respect the previous 2 comments are correct but limitative.

I imagine that you are a program user and not a civil or mechanical engineer trained in the design of towers.

The question is are you trained in the analysis of mechanical structures or not?

If you only have a program and no engineering training (even if you did not design towers) then forget it and say you do not have the skills.

If you are a trained engineer but lack of experience in this particular field you can get from different sources (google) the wind speed versus elevation and indications about the equivalent cross area which depends on the structure geometry and the ratio between profiles and total area. Since you consider a profile structure you place on the nodes the forces considering that the area is uniformly loaded. On every node do come the forces from all areas which meet at the node.

I hope you do not intend to limit the loading to the wind a,d you are aware of ALL other, if not results will not be representative.

After you made your computations let a trained professional check them since you do not have the know-how to appreciate if results are or not correct even if you are an engineer since you did not work in the field.

I presume that it is a school project and I gave you only the way to take but not any more.

You could after your simulations bring the results to CR4 to have a qualified opinion from colleagues which I am sure were already involved in such problems.

Hello

Yes, transmission towers are analysed as space trusses. Wind loads shall be modelled as joint loads at individual panel levels. I am not aware of the "Aabaqus" [Software?] you mentioned. If its similar to STAAD or SAP then the above method is applicable. The legs supports shall be assigned as "Pinned" or "Simply Supported" the Joints shall be assigned as pinned joints. If you need further help on analysing towers, wind loads calculations Etc., Please let me know at fareed_siddique@yahoo.com I use American Standards TIA/EIA 222F & G for wind load calculations and analysing the transmission towers.

You need to calculate the wind loads on the exposed areas based on a code; eg TIA/EIA 222F or Similar. Exposed areas will include all the accessories on the tower along with the Antenna / dishes etc.

Then, you need to simulate these load as Joint loads on the nodes of the tower at all panel levels. Most critical load case will be wind diagonal to the tower. But you could take components of the loads to get the resultant-diagonal loads on the face of the tower. Hi there

You shall calculate the Wind load on each panel; model them as Joint Loads on the Joints of the individual Panel. Wind Loads shall be at the individual Joints at each level to simulate the actual behaviour of the loads on the tower body. The worst wind load case scenario will be wind loads diagonal on the tower panel.
