Web Site Help

10/18/2009 3:11 PM

Hi All,

Can anyone suggest a good person or company to both design a web site and help me get through all the necessary stuff that is like Greek to a heavy mechanical maintenance technician?

I have in mind a very simple site with 3 or 4 pages involved.

The services offered would be on-site inspections and training. Then I was also thinking about sort of a remote technical assistance of sorts as well.

I have absolutely no idea what this may cost to get set up???

These guys will register your domain (the name that you chose) for some $8 a year and for less than $100 a year they will provide the necessary software and help to build your web site with many pages, email and ftp.

Aaaarrrrrggggghhhh. Noooooo, not ipower!!

I had a cohosting (resell and maintain websites) agreement with them for 5 or 6 years. Everything was fine until I tried to shutdown a website. They were very unresponsive about that particular aspect, even after a domain expired and was unreachable.

I recently had to contest a credit card charge from them, trying to bill me for host services on a site that had been shut down for more than two years.

For quick and dirty I would go with godaddy.com or the like. They're about half the monthly cost of ipower (about 5USD/month with bells and whistles). I don't remember their domain registration fees.

I am using

http://www.zymic.com

for FREE hosting. They supplied a free domain name "yournamechoice.vndv.com" and have templates for web pages to get you started. They also offer a relatively cheap web page design service.

IF you are putting up INFORMATIONAL web pages with contact information, this site works fine AND is free.

You can buy a custom domain name from another source ($3-$10 per year) and connect it to your zymic host space. FTP upload is easy and they have a simple File Manager if needed.

I use gedit (context editor MUCH better than notepad) in Linux to write all pages manually. Takes a little time to learn (X)HTML and CSS, but was worth the effort for me. Free template pages on zymic site can be used as a starting point and then customized to your preferences.

I don't need/use any of the other features yet, so I can't confirm how they perform.

If you need HIGH reliability and want to sell products through the website, I believe "paying" for host space and page design will be a safer option.

Yes I do need it to be reliable, not to mention that if I had much to do with setting it up I would probably still be scratching my head about it this time next year.

I personally have made some fairly impressive spread sheets but dare not go much further than that...

So with everything I have seen so far, a couple hundred dollars is all thats required???

www.freewebs.com lets you set up a simple site free with a freewebs.com/yourname web address. www.hostfor2bucks.com sets you up for $24 a year, with your own dot com address. If you found and used this forum, you can use a computer well enough to set up your own simple sites with the above 2 sources and the simple website builders they give you.

Some ISP providers like Earthlink have web space and you do not need to know HTML. I use HTML some but there are tutorials on the net very useful. Check with your internet service they may have this feature of making your own website. Mine is under construction see my profile.
