I think you need a roller assembly on the end of an arm which will allow lateral movement and the ability to detect the difference in stiffness between the nylon belt and the waste material.

I am not 100% certain of the production process you refer to.

Can you tell me if you are looking for a 'tool' to cut this layer, and a way to 'view' it?

The viewing could be done by a small camera or, a laser.

Can I assume you also need some kind of measuring device?

If you can send a pic of the process you want to automate it would be a great help?

I am not sure if you refer to a 'flat' sheet, or a circular shape as a tire actually is.

The calender is a set of multiple large-diameter rolls that squeeze rubber compound into a thin sheet, usually of the order of 2 meters wide. Fabric calenders produce an upper and lower rubber sheet with a layer of fabric in between. Steel calenders do so with steel cords. Calenders are used to produce body plies and belts. I suggest that a light sensing probe be utililzed. It's effectiveness depending on the the difference in light absorbtion of the materials used. If the colors can be effected or modified to enhance the use of optic sensor(s) this would be a plus.

another perhaps more problematic system would utilize ultrasound sensors - which would require some kind of physical contact.

Perhaps relative differences in conductivity an be tapped for this edge detection requirement.

Another proactive means to detect the edge is to simply trim or cut this 'edge' as it is created (the layer(s)). Then remove, recycle or trash the remants. Carlos
