Seismic Switchgear Requirements in California

10/20/2009 3:36 PM

I've heard that the seismic zone 4 requirements are obsolete in California, replaced by IBC 2006. I am looking at installing a 27kV vacuum breaker, 3 sections with utility metering, and I am wondering what will be required as far as seismic certification. This is going into a water treatment plant near San Francisco. Is certification even required for this, or do I just need anchoring calculations?

You need anchoring and foundation calculations.

The requirement would be Seismic Certification in accordance with IBC 2006.

I did a job at a refinery with this requirement. We had a California Licenced PE do the calculations/certifications. We provided detailed shop drawings of the equipment. We got a nice report with anchor bolt requirements. In addition they required that a few more nuts and bolts be used to bolt the adjacent sections together. It cost around 5-6K for the certification.

Hello dda,

Can you give me the contact info for the California Licenced PE that did your calculations/certifications. We need need certification by a California Licenced PE for the switchgear enclosure we are designing/contructing. Also let me know if you and or your company was satisfied with their performance.
