Generator Capacity

10/22/2009 3:43 AM

The Generator supply is given to a big hostel rooms. The capacity of DG Set is 50% less than the full load.So it is proposed to give supply only for lighting loads. The fan loads are to be isolated. The only one cable is feeding from Generator to hostel block and switch board is common for both light & fan.If DG supply is given to that switch board, how can we isolate the fan load only during DG operation period? During other period this has to be connected. Please give economic solution. The re wiring work is not possible.

At the common switchboard, seperate the fan points & the lighting points. Then using a small Pla Relay or a mini contactor & using some N.O. or N.C. logic, it can be easily implemented such that during DG supply only lights would be ON and during mains supply both fans & lights would be ON.

But he says there is only one cable coming from Generator to hostel block. If So, I think we should know how the change over happens and where it happens. The n you can do something as mentioned above by using relays...... For me.. without relays too. by using a small extra wiring.

Dear friend,

Why don't put sub-panel beside the existing panel and just connect the power from the line side of the existing panel? I think that is the most simple and economical way, which you don't requires rewiring. However I assume that the installer is qualified electrician and all safety consideration including wire sizes are taking into accounts. Although I anticipated that you will do personal supervision being BE Electrical and Electronic Engineer with 20 years experience in Power distribution field. as I found in your Biography, so I did not send you the simple one line diagram.

Kind regards

Roman

Assuming that the selector switch / contactors are remote from the board then you could pass a radio signal to operate the necessary contactors or look for one of the suppliers of remote signalling over the existing wires.

You could even do it by GSM. There are a lot of suppliers who can send an signals over the GSM network to operate home automation.

Regards

Chas
