Positive Material Identification(PMI)

10/22/2009 9:18 AM

we constructed 24", 12", 10" 6", 4" and 2" infeed gas line that will supply gas from flowstation to our new constructed gas plant.

The problem i have now as a quality engineer is that the material for construction have no mill test certificates, and as a result , we conduct PMI test and the results show significant percentage deviation in the alloying elements .

can someone advice me what decision to take in resolving this problem. Should i ask for replcement of all the pipes (SA-106), Elbows (A234 WPB) and flanges. The truth is that all the lines have been hydrostatically test to ASME B31.3 standard and all lines passed the test.

What are the analyses that you have come up with on the material ? If you want to send to me via email just hit my name above its a hyperlink to an email utility.

I used to run chem lab for pipe mill among other things...

Now that you have the material identified and a completed successful hydro you can issue a non -conformance report and have your engineering and/or your client accept it as is, if allowed by code.

You can catch the heat numbers directly from the field for pipe, elbows and flanges. Ask your supplier for news certificates. If you loose one of them , take xamples and retest the materials. PMI is not enought.

YEs, by all means ask the m for new paperwork. Ignore the actuial results that are causing such a problem for you. Don't handle the new certs right away, the ink may still be fresh and smeaqr.

The original poster has provided analytical data that indicates the materials aren't even close to compliance with the specifications to which they are ordered. He doesn't need new certs, he needs copmpliant material.

GA, Milo. I have trouble understanding why some people believe whitewash is considered a substitute for correct material or technique. Some items in a project may be a candidate for a certificate of non-compliance, but 24" gas infeed pipe?

O.P indicates "... significant percentage deviation..." How large a red flag must it be? Correct answer is, in the absolute, new material in compliance with SPECIFICATIONS! That is what spec's are for.
