Filter Cloth

01/03/2007 9:55 AM

I am trying to find or develop a membrane filter cloth that will allow 10 angstrom flow in one direction and 2 angstrom flow in the other direction with a 2 millibar pressure differential. No outside power can be introduced. Is anyone familiar with an existing product or manufacturer?

There are several membrane material manufacturers who might have an appropriate material, but there are many more details needed to solve your problem (i.e. fluid properties, temperature, etc.).

If you are willing and/or able to share more details, I might be able to help you. Feel free to contace me here:

I had a friend that worked for this company that manufactured filter cloth in the late 90's. Here is the company info:

American Iwer Corporation

102 Augusta Arbor Way, Greenville, SC 29605 (864) 277-6480

My friend passed away from cancer but you can contact them and they could manufacture the cloth for you.

Not sure whether this will help, but perhaps it will generate some ideas for further searching.

One of my friends just mentioned to me that Gore-Tex is available in sheet form, but I don't know enough about it to say that it would work or not.

VanK,

The material you are looking for is in the range of a reverse osmosis (desalinization) membrane. These materials are commercially available from several sources. Two issues, however: 1.) Your need, however, for assymetric filtration quality (2 angstrom in one direction and 10 angstrom in the other) might be feasible since these membranes typically consist of a gradient structure (still, I have some doubts on this matter), and 2.) these materials might work at the pressure differential that you require but the process rate may be extremely low (so, your economics may be poor).

Companies to contact include: Dow/Film-tec (Minn., MN), Koch Industries (Wilmington, MA), Hydranautics (San Diego, CA), 3M/Cuno (Meriden, CT), Pall Corporation (East Hills, NY) or Millipore (Bedford, MA). GE, Dupont and othes also play in the field. I can make contacts with technical individuals at most of these firms should you wish additional support.

Can you share any thoughts on your intentions?

Matt
