Pad Mounted Transformer

10/26/2009 3:27 PM

Needing a little help I have a 480v 3 wire delta padmount transformer wanting to float b phase. I talked to the transformer comany they said no problem. When I look in metering book it only shows grounded b phase 2 cts 5s meter. What will happen if I dont ground b phase? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chip

These shorts do happen.

Dear Wango,

The grounding is a safety issue, not a metering issue, unless of course the power provider has a requirement about grounding B phase.

As long as you use B phase as the ending potential, with CT's in A and C phases, your meter will have what it needs to register correctly.

I strongly recommend that you have alarms to reveal grounding of one of the phases so you can correct the condition before a second phase grounds, either that or a current limiting grounding system.

Regards, CJM
