Commercially viable transformers complying to IEC76 has "optimum" current density of 2.5 to 2.7Amp per sq mm of copper conductor.Off hand I do not remember that of Alluminium.

One can have higher current density(save copper) by using higher temperature grade insulating material or cooling ducts between winding layers that will however increase cost.Your question is simple but the answer depends on many conditions and specification requirements.

Regards,

Khor
