ASME Standard

10/28/2009 5:53 AM

Dear Members,

As per ASME Section VIII Div.1 part U-3, acceptable edition (year) for various standard to refer pressure-temperature rating, dimensional & etc. like ANSI are listed in table U-3. Refer to ASME B 16.47 "Large Diameter Steel Flange NPS26 to NPS 60", latest edition is 2006 but in table U-3, acceptable edition is 1996.

The question is, could we use latest edition?

Kindly, you all prompt respond are appreciated.

Thank you.

Yes, you can use the latest edition of 2006.

Because the nominated edition of 1996 is as indicated at U-3 is considered the minimum of acceptance, where you are allowed to use the newest editions comes after 1996, and in no way to use the old editions came before 1996.

Question: Why ASME do their best to issue the newest editions of codes & standards if they are not for use? And when we shall use the newest editions?

Dear Mr. Abdel Halim Galala,

Sir, today i got more opinion from ours member as below:

1. Of course if the new edition is more restrictive you may use it, but you have to verify it. So there is no advantage.
Each construction Code Section has a (sub)Committee who discusses the new referenced standards before accepting them. Consequently referenced standard new issued cannot be addressed immediately but only after reviewing balloting and accepting by the Committee.

2. Unfortunately code does not go with the intent. What ever is written in black and white is the Bible. I myself had a case where I was not allowed to use flange ratings for ASME B 16.47, same as of B16.5 ed 2003 since 1996 ed of B16.47, having slightly different pressure rating (since pressure rating of B16.5 were slightly modified in 2003 ed) was indicated on ASME Sec VIII Div 1.

That matter was raised to code committee and isnpite of having the intent to follow same pressure ratings for both the B16.5 and 16.47, it was of no help to us unless an addenda/ revised ed incorporating the same is issued.

Excerpts in my earlier post were received from code committee for the same problem.

Unfortunate but intent does't work.

So, what is your opinion regarding above matter.

Thank you.
