I am not aware of a distinction. Usually, in walk up apartments for example a double partition is used between suites for sound attenuation. There are two sets of wood studs on separate bottom plates separated by about one inch . Drywall is placed on the exposed face of each wall.

There is also a staggered system where studs are placed on the same bottom plate wider than the stud, i.e. 2x4 studs on a 2x6 plate. Studs are alternately staggered so that the exposed face lines up with opposite sides of the plate. This saves space but the sound attenuation is not nearly as good.

If you are doing a cost estimate, you should have architectural details to follow.

Hello ylan s,

Seems to me that the terminology used (or misused as the case may be) is all screwed up. Where did you find these two terms?

Now, IF you are working up your Cost Estimate off Construction Drawings (a part of the Contract Documents) that have been issued by a Registered Architect, then I suggest that you first refer to the Technical Specifications found in the Project Manual regarding the wall requirements. If that doesn't help you then I suggest that you issue a RFI to that Architect for clarification of your concerns and questions. In some instances, there may be a fire code requirement for double layers of Sheetrock each face of the stud wall, pursuant to Under Writer's Laboratory Specifications and guidelines on which many state and local fire code requirements are based.....dunno about the Canadian Prov's though...sorry!

Good luck, and please have a great day!!!!
