Plastic Glass in Automotive Windshields

10/30/2009 2:39 AM

I am searching this information from pretty long time. I am trying to find out is plastic glass used as windshield in any of the production vehicle these days. Plastic glass is a single sheet of glass adhered to PVB sheet and a plastic sheet on inner side.( a layer of anti scratch coating may be present on inner side ).

Quadricycles in europe have very less weight and plastic glass when used helps in achieving a weight reduction of near about 30 % as compared to traditional laminated glass. Please help me with any information. It would be of great help..

Thanking in advance

The closest thing I can think of is lexan, which is used in race cars as windshields and side windows to cut weight. It's plastic, but I don't think any glass is involved.

Hey heman,

I know of the glass you are refering to. My mother had a 1986 Buick Riviera that had a single pane of glass with a layer of plastic on the inside. I'm not sure if it's still used anymore or where you could look. Thought maybe knowing what car had it would give you a starting point possibly. Hope that helps you out some. Have a good one.

TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE THE WINDSHIELD ON VEHICALS USES SAFETY GLASS. tHAT IS, GLASS INSIDE AND OUT WITH THE PVB (PLASTIC) SANDWITCHED IN BETWEEN. THIS IS WHY WHEN A ROCK HITS THE WINDSHIELD THE GLASS BREAKS BUT MOST STICKS TO THE PLASTIC. THE WINDSHIELD GENERALLY STAYS IN PLACE, IN SMALL CHUNKS NOT SLIVERS, WHICH IS VERY BAD FOR SKIN AND EYES. SIDE WINDOWS I THINK USE TEMPERED GLASS AS ITS VERY STRONG.

MULTI LAYERS APPROXIMATELY AN INCH OR SO ARE USED BY MILITARY VEHICALS LIKE TANKS AND HUMMERS.

Yes, Pacesetter what you mentioned is perfectly true. But this Plastic glass is somewhat different. It is being used as sunroofs in many present day vehicles. It too has a PVB sheet sandwiched in between glass which is there on the outer side and plastic sheet on the inner side.So i was willing to know whether it is used as Windshield in any of the vehicles.

Thanks for you feedback,
