Looking for a Heat Resistant Material

I am looking for a material that can withstand temperatures up to 500 deg F that is also pliable enough to be easily folded. I was thinking of dense corrigated type of material that may have a foil type of facing but I'm not sure this would withstand the temperature. Any Thoughts ??

silicone based materials are OK, here. metals that will not oxidise or melt and have the flexibility bt being a matte or foil might serve. Some PTFE materials can operate at 500F

As far as I know, high temp silicone stands up to 500ºF and gets burned so I wouldn't rely on it.

Go Visit your local Heating Supply Company. That type of material is sold for repairs on heating units.

I am not sure they are allowed to sell asbestos in that corrugated form any more. There are of course many inorganics that will take the heat. fiberglass matting with no binder will also serve and can be foil/metal sheet covered

Only 500°F

OK common plastics don't stand but steel, Al, copper and others easily withstand it (a basic corrosion protection like Ni plating will do the job )

If you want an insulator you should try PTFE or LCP based polymers.

You need to buy ceramic blanket. 30 mm thick is good enough for 500 F. This is foldable.

for how much time?

try ablative materials like cork(phenolic cork) thin enoughto be folded , the temp of ablation is around 570 f , it may be stiff but as long you are below that temp there will be no ablation .

other compounds are avilable such as phenolic nylon, or silica based

these are used to cover parts from direct fire or reduce skin temp at very high velocity.

another option would be FASTBLOCK 800, a water based compuond spray.They function effectively at temperatures from -54°C to +204°C (-65°F to +400°F)

and can withstand short-term exposure to temperatures of +1745°C (+3000°F).

No flame penetration or backside ignition of a slab when impinged

upon by an 1100°C, 116 kW/m2 (2000°F, 10 BTU/ft2-s) kerosene

flame for 15 minutes. The following backside temperatures were

recorded at test completion:

 71°C (160°F) for a 10.2 x 10.2 x 2.5 cm (4 x 4 x 1 inch) panel

 256°C (492°F) for a 10.2 x 10.2 x 1.27cm (4 x 4 x .5 inch)

panel

 261°C (501°F) for a 10.2 x 10.2 x .9cm (4 x 4 x .36 inch)

try ptfe. its even used as packing in valves till 510 deg F.

Look into shelf liner material for ceramic kilns, such as Fiberfrax. Is looks, feels and folds like heavy construction paper but is resistant to very high temperatures. It is made from ceramic fibers and can be cut with scissors.
