Repair by Welding SA 216 WCB

11/10/2009 2:56 AM

Good morning,

I have a question concerning repair by welding of casting made of material SA 216 WCB

What for welding consumables would you use for repair these castings ?

I searched in ASME II Part C and found follow:

SFA-5.1 (AWS-E7016) for SMAW ( or alternative SFA-5.5 AWS-E7018-A1)

SFA-5.18 (AWS-ER70S-3) for GTAW (or alternative SFA-5.28 AWS-ER70S-A1)

What do you think of these choices ?

Many thanks for your answers

They are correct. E7016 is the one we commonly use for repair of this grade castings.

However ensure the pre and post weld heat treatments (they are defined in the standards).

BTW: these are one of the most weld friendly material.

Hello,

From which standards did you speak ? Can you give me information about preheat and post weld heat treatments temperature ?

For electrodes E7016 (SFA-5.1), there is not notice about preheat for welding. Only by using SFA-5.5. But this type cannot be used if an impact test is required.

Is there any restriction (thickness of material)?

Thanks

Check the link in #2, (However our preheat as per internal standard are just a bit higher. Our pre heat varies between 100 to 125 deg C depending upon casting thickness and may be even more in case of very thick castings / alloy steels.

For these repairs we have our WPS's and that governs the parameters.

the link is only for reference.

the PWHT normally follows the SR cycle.

AND WHY NOT E - 7018 - 1 grade?

Nothing is wrong with the E7016 but we prefer to use the GMAW .035" wire for better heat control and smaller bead size. Also there is no possibility of slag entrapment with the GMAW process.

We prefer to use ER80S-Ni 1 at our plant because it is Nickel bearing. It works well but we preheat to 250 F and slow cool the part after welding.

You can use E7018 or ER70S-2. WCB alloy is cast steel only.
