How not to use a back actor

11/12/2009 1:30 PM

This is one of the oxidation ponds of a sewage works of a small town. To increase the throughput the breached the wall between two of the ponds.

I have seen a works where all the walls were opened up

having raw sewage leaving the work.

How do we educate the operators before 2010?

Since you mention 2010 - is this in South Africa? If so, the question is moot.

Yes it is SA and we are frustrated with the deterioration of purification works and of course the pollution.

The unqualified operators do what the hand finds to do and fix the immediate problem by . . .

We need help.

We need a book "What every operator and politician should know about purification works"

Try planting lots of wetland plants such as reeds, cattails and bulrushes in the affected area. They'll provide much needed oxygen to break the wastes down quickly.

We have some projects like that in the pipeline but it takes time to get authorization. They are considering irrigating with effluent a bigger sin than straight pollution.
