It depends on what type of envirnoment you are mounting the instrument and not on the instrument itself

If you mean Intellectual Property protection, as in patent protection, it is not required by law. Rather, it is the result of an overall business strategy.

IP protection is mainly aimed at the protection of basic invention say a process or product, system or method. It covers the main featured novel embodiments essential for the performance of the invention. The support gadgets like motor, drives, instrumentation part are common features found in all equipments. If you have a specially designed novel, innovative instrumentation system and needs protection you can claim it so.

Other than that ,more the claims more will be your cost burden. It is better to focus claims for major inventive embodiments and not to commonly used auxiliaries.

IP ratings are indicated on the device made for severe envirnment & need not be for indoor or cheap [throw-away type] things. Nmally Electrical devices /componnts like Socket, plugs, hand torches, lights & Switchgear, Machines for use in outdoor jobs etc etc.

Costly devices like wrist watch, Mobiles, are mntioned in another way like submersion level in meters + time etc & are manufacturers incentive for users.

The items you mentioned are Lab items & rarely used outdoor. Instead their Accuracy & Stability are more important for users.

Guest,

As Hajee has said, the instruments that you mention do not normally require an IP rating.

However if you wish to use these items where they encounter an external environment then you should consider their IP rating. The enclosure in which these instruments are placed should offer some protection, of course, but this is now down to the application.

I take outdoor temperature and humidty measurements every day and all day, in my application only the sensor is outdors, the instrument is indoors as is the remote master!

Good Luck

It took me a moment to figure out the question but evidently this relates to Ingress Protection, IP, and a definition of the various degrees of protection may be found in DIN VDE 0470, DIN EN 60 529, IEC 60529. These are typically used in my experience for electrical devices and enclosures and parallel to some extent the NEMA ratings such as NEMA 12, e.g.:

NEMA 12 – Enclosures constructed (without knockouts) for indoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment; to provide a degree of protection against falling dirt; against circulating dust, lint, fibers, and against dripping and light splashing of liquids.

Yes required. IP ( Ingress Protection ) if instrument is in field or open environment then it is necessery to prevent instrument from water, dust or any outside substance which can damage the instrumet

Guest , can you please abbreviate the term IP of your post, since there is some confusion and can save time ?

IP protection is important depending on ZONE or DIV of the transmitter where will it be located. Of course if you need more protection IP is a must to ensure your transmitter last long.

IP Class should be specified depending on the environment the instrument will be installed in. Manufacturers specify IP ratings of all the instruments you mentioned in their data sheets.
