If you want to understand the hydraulic symbols it is important to understand how the components functions and interact with each other. Not sure of the best spot on the net but a good book on this would be Using Industrial Hydraulics by T.C. Frankenfield.Published by Hydraulics and Pnuematics Magazine. It goes into a fairly good detail at explaining hydraulics.
