Frit on Windshields

11/17/2009 5:24 AM

Now a days almost all vehicles have a black coloured patch called FRIT along the periphery of windshield. It serves two purpose..1) to protect the urethane based adhesive from UV radiations and 2) to add aesthetic value to the car and also act as extended sunvisor in some cases. Here I have a basic doubt of How is frit made. Is it attached to the glass. How???? I tried a lot but was not able to get sufficient and satisfactory information. Please provide what all info you have..

Thanks in advance

Well, I found a little bit, all from internet sources:

http://www.carwindshields.info/glossary.htm At this website, the definition of 'Frit': This is the painted black band around the perimeter of the windshield. The adhesive is underneath this band, so the band is able to help protect the adhesive from damage from the sun.

If I wiki 'frit' I get a lot of information I never knew (if I did, long forgotten) about glass. I do not get any application to the auto industry at all. It looks like a circumstance of a word having two distinct meanings.

Hope this is of some use to you.

In the hot glass business "frit" is a low melting point glass that is used to solder two higher melting point glasses together. This is how the funnel glass and panel glass on a CRT tube are mated. I don't know why the word is used for a windshield. Maybe the layers of glass used to be soldered together with frit at the edges back in the day?

Hi heman,

This area of enamel is called a "frit" and is a black enamel which is baked into the edges of a windscreen. It served several purposes.

It strengthens the edge.

It has a Matt finish to allow better adhesion of the glue to the glass.

It also helps to prevent solar (Ultra-Violet) damage to the adhesive area, where the glue adheres to the car body on the inside.

In older cars there was no need for this as the windscreen was held in place by a rubber molding. Grooved on the outside, which fitted the car body, and the inside edge which the glass slid into, and so was held in place.

Check out these few sites which will explain how it is done.

thanks senator.

I have noticed one more thing. There are dots on periphery of frit in some cases and in some those dots are not present. What is the reason behind providing dots?

thanks in advance,
