what does "nesting" mean?

11/20/2009 9:34 PM

With very little set up time, no tooling and the advent of CAD to CAM production, lasers are oftenutilized in prototyping and production parts. Well suited for intricate details and irregular contours, additional economies can be obtained through the nesting of parts when laser cutting.

SOrry for this kind of entry-level question, but since i am a translator here in CHina, i have to deal with all kinds of stuff from different areas although all these areas can be put under "MECHANICAL ENGINEERING"~~. It is extremely mental-exhausting if one gets to deal with materials from all these areas. Again salute to all those who have ever given me so much generous help .

"Nesting" is the location of profiles or parts of the same material and thickness to be cut out of a plate of material, often steel, but not necessarily. This is done to maximise the the "yield" from the plate in order to reduce wasteage.

Hope this helps

Imagine you have a cardboard sheet 1ft square and you have to cut out circular discs of sizes 1" dia, 2" dia and 3" dia. How would you arrange the cutting layout to fit the maximum possible number of discs into that sheet with the minimum of wastage? Regards.

Checkout an application such as sigmanest http://www.sigmanest.com. It provides for nesting and machine code generation. All the best.
