Current transformer Class Selection

11/27/2009 9:54 PM

I am an electrical engineer, i am currently involved in a substation project. I faced a problem when selecting the current transformer for line protection.

Our country's practice is using class X ct for line protection, but the contractor from other country has proposed a class TPY ct for line protection.

My question is what is the benefit if i choose class TPY? the contractor claimed that Class TPY was better than class X because of it's transient characteristic. Please clarify and provide any reference material if any. Thank you
