A New Home Page

11/29/2009 7:04 PM

I have been using msn.com as my home page, especially the "My MSN" feature that allowed me to select the content of most significance to my own needs. But MS insists on "redesigning" their product and rendering it useless. Can anyone recommend a replacement? What I am looking for is a quick look at the latest international headlines, including international stock exchange overview and business news, but light on the "celebrity" features. I already subscribe to both New York Times and Washington Post e-mails, but both of these are a bit biased in both their coverage and their choice of stories to report- what I would like is what MSN used to offer, which is a synopsis of a viariety of sources in one place. Anyone have any suggestions for a site that doesn't redesign iteself every couple of months?

Google News is pretty good for headlines. You can customize how many stories you want to see listed in different categories like International, Business, Entertainment etc.

Each story is followed by links to three (or more) news services carrying the story, so you can choose your favourite or see what different slants there are on it.

Thanks. That sounds similar to what I am looking for. I will give Google News a shot.

The new MSN allows eight home page tabs up.

These pages are comprehensive:

bwire-

Thanks for the suggestions- every one of them is worth bookmarking, but what I am looking for is something a bit more "universal"- sort of like watching Fox News and CNN or BBC simultaneously on the TV. No single source gives you a full perspective on the issues, and what I used to like about MSN was the ability to tap in to different sources for the same story. Google News seems to offer this as well, but I haven't determined yet if they cover the important issues in sufficient depth to suit my desires. Years ago I found Asian Times to be a very objective source, much like BBC used to be, but it has been a long time since I have had access to the print version...

I'm just trying out the new feature at Google News, that allows you to customize your news categories and add as many as you want.

One thing I've noticed in the past, my major criticism of the site, is that sometimes the headlines aren't updated with new stuff as often as I might like. Maybe it's a "top stories" vs "new stories" thing. I'm expecting that updates may be even slower for custom categories, but we'll see.... So far, it looks like a dedicated site would be much better for specific types of news.

I use 'blank' as my home page. that way I don't have to put up with all the advertising.

Other than the fact that all the advertising tends to really slow down how fast a page loads, doesn't really bother me. What bothers me is having to click through a dozen or so levels to get to the meat of whatever it is I am looking for, and then trying to remember the roadmap of how I got there in the first place, when I want to have another look...

Full Coverage from Yahoo news is exactly that; read articles from multiple sources about one event. Checkout at http://www.libraryspot.com/features/currentevents.htm

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/ is a good bookmark for when you want to check out the latest. It breaks plenty of science/engineering news before it gets posted on CR4.

I use "Firefox" as my browser and standard is a bookmark "latest headlines" which connects to the BBC service.

I do the same, but what I like is a mix of sources for any particular story I am interested in. BBC, which seems to be out-CNNing CNN on Cable TV, still seems reasonably conservative (tho not nearly so much as the Economist), but one needs the Liberal (i.e., NYT or Washington Post) perspective to balance this. Then, one throws in something really off-line, like Fox News or Rush Linbaugh, and maybe turn to the shortwave radio to listen to the old USSR version of Radio Free Europe, and you start getting a pretty balanced picture of what might actually be happening. Of course, by the time you are finished with all this study and analysis, the story you are interested in has disappeared from the media anyway...
