Welding Consumables and AWS Specification

11/30/2009 9:58 PM

Dear all,

My contractor has proposed preliminary WPS to be qualified for welding super duplex heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is designed based on ASME VIII Div 1 and TEMA. The proposed welding consumables stated in WPS and welding consumable data sheet do not have specification i.e no SFA No, AWS No, F-No and A-No. E.g. Supercore Z100XP produced by Metrode for FCAW. Can I use that welding consumables to qualify the WPS based on ASME IX and that WPS/PQR can be used for ASME U-stamp heat exchanger? Please advice. TQ.

First test a sample for mech strengths. Which country are you in? Is stamping essential? If the test is satisfactory, probably you can ignore it.

I'm from Malaysia and stamping is essential.

Selection of weld filler metal and process of welding is the Contractor choice. Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) specified by the Contractor must qualify Non-Destructive Testing (generally Radiographic Testing) and Destructive Testing (Mechanical Testing). Experienced contractor would alway specify tested filler metal and tested process of welding on the job. You may use your selected filler metal after contractors recommended filler metal and process of welding is failed.

If this is what they want to use, then it will have to be tested both as a radiographed or ultrasound coupon, and destructively tested for tensile, elongation, and bends. You will likely need at least 1 all weld metal test specimen. Link below.

I saw no endorsements from the usual Agencies, which generally means that the formulations are proprietary, and you'll have to pay for an as deposited chemical analysis yourself. Regardless of certification of the filler, you will have to qualify the procedure in that I'm not aware of any pre-qualified procedures on this class of materials.

Our contractor will qualify the WPS using that electrode by NDT (RT) and mechanical testing in accordance with ASME IX. How about AWS, F No. and A. No of the electrode which are an essential and supplementary variable as per ASME IX to be filled in WPS/PQR? Does this WPS/PQR meet ASME IX and ASME VIII requirement? TQ

It has been more than 20 years since I have been directly involved with this, but if the test results all came in within acceptable parameters, I would have no problem in getting this signed-off by the AIs. I see no reason why this would have changed in the ensuing years if backed by acceptable test results.
