These (and other ion generators) produce ozone which, in very low amounts, can freshen-up a room and help destroy odors (I'm building a negative-ion generator for my shop to help freshen it up a bit, as the previous owner of our property used the room for his dogs. Ugh!).

With you leading the way in the design, I was wondering if this design could be shared? I have been looking at a "whole house" freshener but for one reason or another the available designs were/was not what I wanted. May be interested in a room unit also and of course would customize to suite. Just a thought.

I also suffer from SAD, and I've found that the air ionizer we use in the lab for static protection seems to help my mood. I think it blows both positive and negative ions though.

I also have SAD and have found that working in a brightly-lit room helps a great deal. Along with brightness, the dominant wavelength of the light can influence its overall effectiveness. Blue light has been found to be especially helpful in treating SAD, and the light need not be so dazzlingly bright as the traditional incandescent light banks marketed to SAD sufferers. Thankfully, high-brightness blue LEDs have greatly come down in price in the last few years, making it economical for SAD sufferers to build illuminators every bit as effective as the outrageously expensive commercial units.

This time of year is a great time to purchase blue LEDs, by the way - in the form of Christmas lights. If you'd like to build a DIY illuminator, be sure buy extra strings as a source of replacement LEDs. Christmas LEDs aren't typically of top-drawer quality, so expect a few duds in the lot. If, on the other hand, you can afford them, Cree's high-power blue LEDs are probably the best blue LEDs money can buy.

When we used UV erasable EPROMS, I had an eraser with a UV lamp that shone on an aluminum surface. I would get a strong ozone odor when I opened the enclosure after an erase cycle. I can't remeber any mood alteration, but I do recall that my throat would feel scratchy just like the L.A. smog used to do.

There's good ozone and there's bad ozone. Smog is the bad kind.

Spot on. Now, if we could only shrink that Tesla coil to pill-size, the pharmaceutical companies would be all over it, laughing all the way to the bank - like they do now.

Bioaire use to be about the only manufacturer. I had one for decades. I have given several away also. If the voltage is too high [some manuf] to boost ion production, there is too much ozone created. and sometimes not the beneficial ozone. also the electrode will "detiorate" rapidly. I am moving soon and will replace my missing ion gen with the Bioaire model[s]. when up close everyone loved the barely detectable aroma. I have never owned the larger models.

There is not a 'beneficial' type of ozone versus other types of ozone. Ozone is O₃. The significant factor is the quantity of ozone produced. There is only one type.

The electrode deteriorates rapidly at high levels of ozone production because ozone is a very powerful oxidizer. This also accounts for ozone's toxicity at high concentrations.
