In reading the last part of your post, it sounds like you almost did specify it. Any hydraulic cylinder vendor should be able to help you very easily, and will ask you any additional information required such as method of mounting and the specifications on the rod end. The other question I would have is how much room do you have to mount it, since if you really need a 24 1/4" stroke and want to avoid a custom cylinder you would likely be ordering a 25"or 26" stroke (you can limit the stroke easily, but can't lengthen it) and the overall retracted length would likely be longer than the present cylinder but that is not definite, especially if it was custom made for that machine (unlikely here, but not necessarily so in other countries). A difference in rod diameter shouldn't matter in terms of compatibility as long as you can match the rod end to your machine. The rod ends on most cylinders are threaded on, and can be replaced. The other specs sound standard: 5" bore, 3000 psi etc.

All the other info about the machine that you give at the beginning of your post is unnecessary in terms of cylinder replacement.

Good Luck.

OK before this dicussion gets to far/worse.

Has anyone done a flow rating test on the hydraulic power pack pump to see if it needs to be rebuilt or changed out for a new one?

Who is the manufacturer of the hydraulic power pack?

Is it manually operated or automatic control with solenoids?

1. Where is the manual and parts list for the pallet rotator in question?!!!!????, YOU SHOULD BE GETTING ALL THE INFORMATION FROM THE SERVICE AND PARTS MANUAL ATTACHED TO IT.

(A) The manual will have a complete parts list for the machine. Where is the manual for the hydraulic power pack for the pallet rotator?

(a) Do you have the serial number for the pallet rotator? It will be easy to find on the frame.

(b) If everything else is alright all you may need a is a cylinder repacking kit-if so order two of them and have a spare overcenter control valve in stock/or a rebuild kit for the valve if it is welded to the cylinder.

Is the cylinder in question using a mono packing system for the cylinder or a compression packing? for the piston and gland/stuffing box.

Does the cylinder in question have a threaded packing gland that screws into the barrel of the cylinder or is it bolted in place with drilled allen head cap screws and wired in place to keep it in place and avoid loosening of the gland?

The cylinder in question will have at least two o rings -one positioned in the inner circumference of the packing gland and one in the threaded end of the piston rod sealing the piston rod from the upper half of the cylinder.

(B) Do not guess at anything regarding MEASUREMENTS for this unit/cylinder as it will most likely have a stop tube to support the cylinder packing gland and rod in the cylinder barrel on the packing gland side of the interior of the cylinder which will reduce its actual extended length.

(C) Do not use your measurements!

(D) Look at the base of the cylinder barrel for a tag riveted to the barrel for the manufacturer and a serial number of the cylinder. If the cylinder has been painted carefully remove the paint to expose the tag and write down all the information on the tag.

(E) What are conditions are the rotator bearings/bushings? If you need to replace the cylinder the bearing and bushings should be replace also as a matter of course due to the hydraulic forces generated in all directions by the rotation of the trunnion mounting of the pallet rotator due simply from the huge forces generated by the act of rotation. I f there is the slightest bit of movement/slpoyness in the bearing surfaces they all need to be changed.

If "Toptek" is still a going concern contact them for the cylinder and a new overcenter control valve.

You have a lot of work to do before you even think about ordering a cylinder as that may not be the problem to begin with.

mtararat:

The questions that are posted here very often require a lot of guess work when formulating an answer.

I assumed he was reasonably knowledgeable but unfamiliar with ordering hydraulic cylinders and was dealing with an older machine that he couldn't get factory replacement parts for, lacked manuals and parts lists (that at least might have been cross referenced with other part numbers) but that he had gone over it and determined it needed a new cylinder.

You assumed he was not at all knowedgeable, and hadn't done any preliminaries. You may well be right! Based on the question, its all guesswork. You spent some of your time to give him a thorough checklist of things to look at, and that's commendable.

I have replaced many cylinders, with "substitutes" on a wide variety of older machines, modifying mounts or rod ends if necessary, and from my perspective you made that particular part of it sound a lot more complicated than it usually is.

I did not specify a cylinder for him, but suggested he contact a vendor.

Between our somewhat opposite guesses, maybe thats where his situation lies ... but then again maybe not.
