New Micro Hydro Plant

12/04/2009 8:11 PM

Hey guys:

I thought you would enjoy seeing a brand new micro hydro plant that I designed. It is about to go online. I origionally designed it in 2000. It took 9 years to get the fefedral license and to build it. Kudos to my business partner Ken Smith!!! It is beeuuteafull!!:

Really cool, although my understanding of 'Micro' needs some adjusting (probably with a big hammer)

The link just worked for me - great stuff!!! I love how the scale of the hydro fits right into the town... wow. Beautiful engineering, great power source and pretty as a fountain.

Dear Guest,

I tried unsuccessfully to connect to the link indicated. When will you be able to give us all a look at this. Likely to be widely sought after, thanks

I recently saw a micro-hydro project on TV. I believe it powered 4 homes and consisted of a PVC pipe directing water from some water source located above and at some distance from the small turbine. It was very cool indeed.

I've been working on a project for a Hydro Generator on a water pipeline that carries river water used for space cooling. We have from 5-15,000 GPM available with 50 ft of head.

We haven't found many turbine-generator manufactures of equipment in this size range, can anyone direct us to any contacts they have for equipment in this size range please.

It looks like the linked site has pulled his entry for some reason, or has moved it to another section of the site (I couldn't find the entry on the site under any "Alternative ..." heading, and the link truly doesn't work, as of 12-07-2009. Admittedly I used Firefox to look, but that should have no bearing, as the URL is straightforward, and their is no script needing to run, nor any other "web logic trick" involved).

Pity, because I, too, would have like to look at it. And I have a friend who is retiring to the US New England states, who is actively seeking for this kind of information, as he intends to build his entire power system to an "off-grid" state, very soon after retiring. His intent is to use a mixed system of wind, water, and solar generation, to ensure power availability in any weather conditions.

I don't remember the state, but they apparently have some very forward-thinking laws on the books concerning power utilities being required to buy micro-generated power from users. In fact we've been talking about the differences between where I will retire, and where he will, and in my case, I'll NEED a battery bank to store power until I either have enough and can synchronize it properly to sell to the utility, or stay away from the utility completely. In his state, there is no such need, as the utilities are required to install a synchronizer system such that any power above your current needs basically reverses your meter. New Hampshire, I think he said, but I'm not certain. Wish all states felt that way about home generated power.
