ESD is a emergency shutdown system which is specially designed for emergency shutdown devices. Consider a solenoid which can shut down the valve in case of emergency.So these kind of devices are incorporated in the ESD system and cable must be terminated with IS barrier.This system can be controlled by PLC or DCS.Totally depends on design section.

You must not be a experienced person i feel.From google search you cant be an expert.So try to take some experiences in the process plant.
