Magnetic Lifter or Fixture for Lifting Coils

12/05/2009 9:51 AM

Hi

Anybody has got any idea of using magnetic lifters for Pipe Making coils or skelpsfor lifting and palcing in the uncoiler.

Or any special fixture for the same?

We use normal hooks and which is making the coil oval and due to which we cannot place the coil on the holder perfectly.

Please share if anybody got any idea or use similar equipment.

Best regards,

Ralish

First thought; do you have to control residual magnetism or Gauss in the finished pipe?

If so, a magnetic coil handler is probably not wise.

Vacumn Lifts are dangerous and I have seen quite a few close calls.

Check this out.

The mill near here that is making pipe uses something similar, and I think you might find one with a curved base on the hook to prevent distortion.

I would shy away from magnetic lifters, as there are increased product quality and safety factors induced.

Coil transfer cars are a viable option to C-Hooks and there are many different designs out there. It would be hard to recommend a specific type as I am not familiar with your facility layout.

But you would want to consider one with a top clamping arm for safety considerations related to movement of thinner coil widths. And also one with coil rotation ability which will provide for proper orientation of slit edge burr.

For additional solutions, your best bet is to contact the plethora of Tube/Pipe equipment manufactures that are out there. Some that come to mind off the top of my head are:

Royalton

Guild

Rafter

T&H Lemont

Yoder

There are many more out there, and with today's economy, you may also be able to find some quality used coil transfer cars as well.

Good Luck,

Some great choices, USS uses T&H Lemont where I am at right now.

Good answer and I will give you a thumbs up.

Safety is the primary issue---we deal with coil from 55k to about 60k on this job and one dropped 15 or so feet made a huge dent in the mill concrete floor, and that ain't thin.

Thanks for the GA.

I'm a 4th generation Tube&Pipe guy myself. My family has a storied history with the Yoder organization. Where my grandfather and great-grandfather were both engineers for Yoder, and never worked for anyone else, my father and I, although we both started at Yoder, have moved around a little - working (at one point or another) for every company I listed - plus some.

I've been the only one in the family to make the transition from the OEM side of the house to working for an actual tube producer though. And now I've even transitioned more, I'm the Environmental Management Representative for our facility... it's funny where our path takes us sometimes.

Nice to meet some fellow tubers on the forums though *bows*

I am amazed every day when I think about growing up on the farm and doing what I do now.

The rust belt skills never die, they just get better.
