Rein or Polymer for High-Speed Bonding

12/05/2009 10:10 AM

I am trying to understand what type of resin or polymer to utilize to create a high speed bond on a corrugated or fiber container. I was able to accomplish bonding in a static application utilizing a polymer strip and an induction horn application, but there is a need for an in motion process. The process would involve 4 panels with 2, three inch by 1/4 inch bonding areas. Basically I am trying seal a carton in motion. The carton will be travelling at approximately 56 feet per minute. Can anyone shed some light on a compound or resin that has a fast melt time and a fast cure time that could be applied to the corrugated or fiber prior to bonding? I have been tasked with "thinking outside of the box" if you will.

Certain grades of EVA hotmelt adhesives will meet your need. EVA is solvent free environmentally friendly adhesives extensively used packing, book manufacturing, shoe assembly, garment industries etc. The glue is very versatile and applications can be easily automated. Search under this category will lead to you wealth of information.

The previous poster has a good idea. Here's a web site that might give you some ideas:
Automatic Tape Machines, Case Sealers, Box Tapers

Hi I-Budman,

I glue paper labels come out of the computer's printer, use Rhoplex 2438 emulsion as adhesive on metal, plastic paint cans and pails. I am satisfied by the rapidhardening of a thin coat. Use some pressure and the thackifier works. Ask a sample, 1 litre to 4 litres, as a free of charge sample from Rohm and Haas. Just punch in the emulsion and you get everything you need. Good use of waterbourne products, Gil.

Gil Hi,

Thanks for the reply. In my mind I was trying to save some time and money on our end of the packaging process. I was thinking of some sort of coating being preapplied to the carton material that would be heat activated as in the ultrasonic or transducer type. I never really entertained the thought of an emulsion. I'll give it a try, thanks.
