Flange Ratings

12/08/2009 11:41 PM

What exactly we mean by 150# or 300# or 600# of a flange? If I take it in a way that a particular flange of 150# can withstand 150 psi i.e 6 bar of pressure but then we are using 150# flanges for higher than 6 bar pressures (which are design pressures of the system). Please explain. Thanx in advance.

Re: Rating of flanges

Rating is way of classifying flanges. It denotes allowable Pressure temperature combination and not just pressure ot Temp. 150# CS- A105 flange can stand 260 PSI at 200 Deg.F but only 140PSI at 600 Deg F Hope you get it.

The classes 150#, 300#, ... etc. are just considered as a categorization or a family name for each group of flanges. And 150# Class 150 ≡ Rating 150, all three names are correct, but don't mean that the flange will withstand a pressure of 150 lb/in2 (pound per inch square).

See CR4 Threads: • Pound Rating, • Pressure Rating & • PN 40 ANSI Class 300

hello,

Flange rating is Temperature-Pressure rating of flange for each material (not just pressure rating).

Flange rating of any material is decided by taking consideration of Design Pressure ,Design Temperture and Material.

In ASME B 16.5(from flange size upto 24" excluding 22") you will find table for selection of rating for each material.

ASME B 16.47(from flange size 26" to 60")

I just want to share with you an example of Table 2-1.1 of ASME B.16.5. The figures are in bar for 150# and 300# flange

Temp C / 150# / 300#

-29 to 38 /15.9 / 41.4

50/15.6 / 40.6

100 / 14.5/ 37.8

150 13.7 35.9

By referring to the appropriate table in the standards, you will get the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) for the flange in interest.

The above example is only for one type of material and other tables refer to other type of materials. So the MAWP is not only a function of temperature but also type of material.
